Logwood Vat

Expense: $325

Hours: 6 hours + 1 hour lunch break

Sunday July 31st 10:00 – 5:00

Materials Included: All of the mordant and dye stuffs, in addition to 5 100-gram skeins of Mohair/Cotswold/Merino yarn from Wing & A Prayer Farm’s flocks, are provided. Students will also receive a handout with information about common native dye plants plus recipes and procedures & recommended resource list to work with at home.  Please bring a pair of  durable gloves, such as those you would clean with, and an apron or smock to protect your clothing.  We will be taking a short walk to study foraging materials in the wild, so wear appropriate footwear.

*includes $160 materials fee

tammy yarnNatural dyeing teaches you to discover the range of shades from numerous sources in everyday plant materials. In the garden, for instance, marigold, dahlia & coreopsis will give a range of oranges, golds, yellows, and greens. In the field, nettles and goldenrod will share greens and yellows, blackberries give a range of purples and blues. From the woods we can find pink in the birch or soft shades of brown and mauve in lichens.

You will learn how to prepare your fiber, your mordant and dye baths and step-by-step, ready the materials and extract color, then dye your fiber and discuss after-care. You will depart with your arms’ full of a fiber that has been hued with renewable resources without compromising the integrity of your yarn.

The pace of the workshop is steady and relaxed, as there is no rushing natural dyeing. We will ensure you have plenty of time to learn without becoming overwhelmed if you are new to dyeing, or ask questions and explore if you come with some background in dyeing.

Tammy White is a shepherdess on Wing & A Prayer Farm in Southern Vermont where she raises various fiber flocks and herds to cultivate breed-specific farm yarns. In addition to caring for the farm of 50 sheep, 6 alpacas, 12 angora goats and more, she dyes her own yarn with color from nature using plant matter in her surrounds and natural dye extracts. She has over 30 years of experience as an educator and she regularly shares at workshops and farm tours.

An increased interest in using what is at hand has been the foundation of Tammy’s dyeing knowledge. Her approach is a combination of experience and education. Utilizing both precision and intuition to get the most of out of the natural dye process helps her to render reliable colors, with fastness, on her beloved flocks’ fiber.
