Libs Elliott Lecture + Workshop

weightoflove_wallnido welcomes modern quilting designer, Libs Elliott, to Burlington to discuss Quilting with Code and to teach our community of crafters her Weight of Love Workshop.

Libs Elliott is a textile designer exploring the intersection of technology and traditional craft by using generative design to build handmade quilts.

libs-6Her quilts are randomly designed using a programming language called Processing. The project began in 2012 as a collaboration with designer and technologist, Joshua Davis (joshuadavis.com), who provided the original code framework. Using Processing allows Libs to quickly edit the code and generate random compositions from simple geometric and traditional quilt block shapes.

This ongoing project is an exploration in how modern technology can transform a traditional and tactile craft into modern functional art without abandoning the inherent pleasures of handcrafted products.

libs-unity-quiltLibs explains, “Many of us have become accustomed to identical mass-produced goods, but I believe many of us also crave personalized objects that communicate our individual identities.”

Her goal is to underline the importance of craft as art in our contemporary age by producing bespoke modern heirlooms – just like quilts from a century ago, these are pieces that can be passed down through generations.

libs-4

Libs will be giving a lecture held at the Fire House Gallery discussing her ongoing exploration of how technology can transform a traditional craft into modern, functional art. She will show examples of her work and give attendees a peek into her process.

She will also be holding a one day workshop on her Weight of Love quilt pattern. The Weight of Love pattern is exclusive to participants who take the workshop with Libs. It is a pattern made up of hex, half-hex and equilateral triangle pieces and was designed randomly using Processing Code. Participants will customize and create their own Weight of Love with selections of solids and prints using the Y-seam piecing method.

Rhinebeck or Bust!

rhinebecksheepnido’s visit to Rhinebeck this year was nothing short of awesome! The New York Sheep and Wool Festival never disappoints, but this year the weather was amazing and we got to meet up with old friends and new.

magpierhinebeckFriday, we made it over to Indie Untangled to check out Magpie Fibers, YOTH Yarns, and the many other incredible, independent dyers and designers. The array of color and fiber offerings truly had us wanting it all!! For those who didn’t make it to the show, we did bring home some beautiful new colorways of Magpie fibers Swanky DK and YOTH’s Father that are already on nido shelves.

saltpointmill3New York really brought it’s A-game with some stunning fall foliage this weekend.

pompom2016Saturday, we arrived to Rhinebeck early to get a head start on our vendor list. First stop, Pom Pom Magazine! We love visiting with the incredible designers featured in their issues and this year we were able to snag the not-yet-released Winter 2016 issue: Reflections! Thanks to Kiyomi Burgin and Sachiko Burgin for signing our copies and for creating such beautiful pieces in the new issue. We are in love with Kiyoimi’s Fragmentation Hat, a geometric gradient design worked from different shades of sock yarn. Check out Sachiko’s beautiful Cesium Pullover out of Green Mountain Spinnery Mountain Mohair showcasing a beautiful cable design.

The newest issue will be hitting nido shelves early November. In addition, Pom Pom’s newest book, Take Heart from Fiona Alice, will also be arriving! This new book features accessories using yarns from locally owned British & Canadian companies. It is a beautiful publication we are looking forward to having in the shop!

From booth to booth, we made our way around the fairgrounds to check out yarns from across the country. Of course we made sure to munch on some delicious cider donuts while doing so!

nidomeetsdrearenee We had the pleasure of meeting Andrea Mowry of Drea Renee Knits, the designer of the Sheltered Poncho, the pattern for our #ShelteredNidoKAL. She was the sweetest gal adorning her lovely designs, taking a second to give us some great sizing pointers for our ponchos. So nice to meet you, Andrea!

rhinebeckgroupIt was great to see friends from the nido community who made it to Rhinebeck! Not to mention, hanging out with Stephen West!! Saturday evening, we made it to Jill Draper Makes Stuff‘s Open Studio for an incredible evening of fiber treats. Not only was her studio warmly filled with her vibrant yarns, but Stephen West was signing his new book, Westknits Best Knits. In his words, “Keep on Knittin’ Kitten!”

saltmill5Until next year, Rhinebeck. Thanks for a memorable trip!

Welcome, Brooklyn Tweed Yarn + Patterns

nido is excited to announce the arrival of Brooklyn Tweed yarns + patterns to the shop!

BT6

BT2Come check out Loft, Shelter, and Quarry in the full Brooklyn Tweed color palette. Thumb through Jared Flood’s newly released book, Woolens, for project inspiration from brioche scarves to colorwork cowls to cabled hats.

14141583_1062470870454983_8419049278150337147_nA little about Brooklyn Tweed:

Brooklyn Tweed began as a knitting blog in 2005 by Jared Flood, after his recent move to New York where he started his career in knitwear design. In 2010, the company was officially created bringing Jared’s vision of American-made wool yarns to market.

Brooklyn Tweed is a company that manufactures breed-specific yarns and supports domestic textile production right here in the USA. For example, their worsted-weight Shelter yarn comes from Wyoming Targhee-Columbia sheep, is dyed in Philadelphia and is spun in New Hampshire at Harrisville Designs.

Join nido Tuesday, October 11th from 6-8pm for the launch of Brooklyn Tweed yarns at the shop! To celebrate, we are casting on and kicking off our #ShelteredNidoKAL of Drea Renee Knits’ Sheltered Poncho. KAL’ers will enjoy 15% off materials at nido including both print and digital patterns and yarn. Come to craft night Tuesday’s from 6-8pm to share your poncho progress. The KAL will conclude Tuesday, January 10th at craft night with a group celebration in our ponchos!

All KAL participants will be in the running to receive a free pattern from Andrea Mowry of Drea Renee Knits, just for being apart of the fun. Thanks, Andrea!

See you all next Tuesday for an evening of Brooklyn Tweed fun!
