marled_magic_2Marled Magic Workshop

Saturday, May 6th 11:00 am – 2:00 pm* UPDATE – Class is full.

Saturday, May 6th 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Cost: $75 (not including materials)

Learn all about Stephen’s Marled magic tricks for combining multiple yarns. Participants will experiment with holding 2 strands of yarn together to create fabrics that look like painted works of art. Choose between Stephen’s Marled Magic shawl design OR Samen shawl. Digital pattern included with class. Class is limited to 20 students.

Marled Magic 1Materials: Marled Magic shawl participants should bring a colorful pile of fingering weight yarns and a US8 circular needle. Stephen recommends bringing a color palette of at least 5-10 colors to start. For example, bring shades of blue to create a warm palette with pinks, oranges, and reds. Gather more yarn from your stash than you think you may need because you can always edit your yarn selection later. It’s best to have a broad range of colors and yardage amounts so you have more options to choose from while you knit each section. If you want a super colorful shawl, bring a bag full of colorful fingering weight yarns to stripe and play! Lace weight mohair yarns are also highly encouraged.

Samen ShawlMaterials: Samen shawl participants should bring 5 different colors (full skeins) of lace weight yarn and US 5 needles. If you are a tight knitter, use a size 6 or 7 needle. In the beginning of the class, participants will experiment and play with color combinations and then then start the shawl project in the second half of class.  Please also bring a collection of scrap yarn (approximately 7-10 colors of fingering weight yarn) and US 8 / 5mm needles to play with marled color techniques. Mohair and fluffy textures are also encouraged.

Spinning Tales Recap with Handmade & Woolen

A big thank you to Jennie + Devon from Handmade & Woolen for stopping by to share their stories of becoming videopodcasters as apart of our Spinning Tales with Fiber Folk series.

Screen Shot 2017-03-23 at 5.28.14 PMWe learned all about the beginnings of their fiber careers in NYC, to finding their new home in Vermont, to the evolution of Handmade & Woolen videocast. We related to so much of what they shared and left feeling inspired to get creating!

This husband + wife team has submersed themselves in all things fiber from knitting, spinning, weaving, shearing and sewing to learning about sheep breeds with plans to have their own flock in the not-so-distant future.

Devon is one of the co-creators behind Rib magazine, a magazine for men and those who knit for them. He previewed samples from the upcoming issue of Rib Magazine releasing in June, that they are shooting next weekend in beautiful Boston.

Jennie has a self-imposed project to create a completely handmade wardrobe by 2020. (So awesome, right?!). Podcasters can get involved in the fun, too, through Handmade & Woolen’s Natural Wardrobe Make-A-Long. This MAL features a quarterly goal of either sewing or knitting wardrobe garments without the use of synthetic materials. You can tune in to hear her weekly progress towards this goal, and learn about other projects and diber happenings both are involved with.

Looking ahead, the fiber duo hopes to bring more attention to wool support in the US. In Rib, Devon hopes to showcase softer natural wool from down breeds and historic US breeds.

Thanks again you two. It was really wonderful hosting you at the shop and having you share your stories with our community.
