the fibre co cumbira fingering

Inspired by England’s stunning northwest region with its deep blue lakes and sheep-grazed fells and valleys, Cumbria Fingering is a lighter weight version of The Fibre Co popular Cumbria, a lustrous blend of 30% brown masham wool from rare breed sheep, 60% fine S. American merino wool, and 10% mohair. The resulting light brown-grey shade is then over dyed creating lovely deep saturated colors. Cumbria Fingering is a staple yarn, perfect for garments and accessories alike.

Heather Jones Workshop Recap

It has only been just over a week now since Heather Jones left town and I am still bursting with creative energy in her wake! It is no big secret around here that I myself do not get a whole lot of personal sewing accomplished. After one day of learning color theory basics and new sewing techniques with Heather, I dusted off the old sewing machine, took over our dining room table and have not stopped sewing since. It feels just like old times, when sewing was EVERYTHING! It feels great!

DS4A1994(1)nido’s special Linework and Design Workshop with Heather was wonderful. Heather told us about her personal journey with sewing and how she started off as a painter. Her stories behind her quilts are simple yet engaging. Everything was very tangible and I too, felt so incredibly inspired by her creative muses.DS4A1792There were 19 participants all with various levels of sewing under their belts. Everyone worked with their own color palette. I think it was a bit challenging and different for everyone to be working with only solids! It challenged us in a different way and had us discussing color values.

DS4A1919The Firehouse Gallery could not have been a better setting with it’s large layout and windows overlooking Church Street. Everyone went to work and completed a 16 X 16 mini linework piece.

DS4A2018Jessica Sipe was able to join us for a bit and captured some photos of all of us. It was truly an amazing day!

If you were unable to make it to the Linework + Design Workshop with Heather Jones, be sure to check out our next special workshop with Carolyn Friedlander.

Spinning Tales with Vermont Fiber Folk

nido is bringing the conversation to you. Fiber farmers, spinners, natural dyers and local purveyors will be discussing their stories with us Sunday mornings this spring, making connections between farm to needle.

Tammy-holding-fleece-with-overalls-onJoin nido and the incredible Tammy White, from Wing and A Prayer Farm, Sunday, March 6th from 10am to 12 noon to learn all about her working fiber farm in Shaftsbury, Vermont. $5 event ticket available by cash at the door.

Tammy will share how to get the most from breed specific yarn farming, starting your own dye garden and sustainable wool dye methods.

Tammy is mom to 3 young adults, and shepherdess and proprietress of Wing & A Prayer Farm in Shaftsbury, Vermont where her fiber flock consists of 6 Alpacas, 13 Angora Goats, and 50 Shetland, Merino, Cormo & Cotswold sheep. She harvests their fiber to be processed locally and hand dyes with natural extractions derived from foraged and farmed materials. Her passions include tending to her flocks and gardens, leading educational farm tours and baking up a storm in her 4-oven farm kitchen.

nido’s holiday gift guide

At nido, we are busy crafting and creating our gifts for loved ones. Megan is working on her third sweater (she is rocking it!) while Steph just completed a couple of hats. One of those hats being for Gene, our fearless UPS Delivery Man! Using Quince and Co. Osprey, she knit the Simple Hat from the Home & Away book.

Need any last minute inspiration for gifts or projects?

Look no further than nido’s Staff Picks Holiday Gift Guide!

Stephanie’s Pick: Ashford weaving loom + weaving kit. We all know Stephanie’s love for knitting sweaters, but in the new year she is hoping to experiment with weaving!

Melissa’s Pick: nido’s newest shipment of Mammoth Flannel is calling Melissa’s name. She hopes to sew up some comfy P.J.’s using Grainline Stuido’s “Lakeside” pattern.

Staffer Megan would like to make the Butte sweater out of Quince and Co. Puffin. And naturally, she would love a ball winder so she can wind all that yarn!

Kaitlin would love to attend the Heath Jones Workshop at nido February 6th. She hopes to take her first quilting workshop this year! After recently joining the Vermont Modern Quilt Guild (VTMQG), she has been inspired to quilt, quilt, quilt!

Mollie has been inspired by the Mary Flannagan Textured Felted Wool Bundles! She would love to make Purl Soho’s Patchwork Quillow.

Merry Making to all!
