nido’s holiday gift guide

At nido, we are busy crafting and creating our gifts for loved ones. Megan is working on her third sweater (she is rocking it!) while Steph just completed a couple of hats. One of those hats being for Gene, our fearless UPS Delivery Man! Using Quince and Co. Osprey, she knit the Simple Hat from the Home & Away book.

Need any last minute inspiration for gifts or projects?

Look no further than nido’s Staff Picks Holiday Gift Guide!

Stephanie’s Pick: Ashford weaving loom + weaving kit. We all know Stephanie’s love for knitting sweaters, but in the new year she is hoping to experiment with weaving!

Melissa’s Pick: nido’s newest shipment of Mammoth Flannel is calling Melissa’s name. She hopes to sew up some comfy P.J.’s using Grainline Stuido’s “Lakeside” pattern.

Staffer Megan would like to make the Butte sweater out of Quince and Co. Puffin. And naturally, she would love a ball winder so she can wind all that yarn!

Kaitlin would love to attend the Heath Jones Workshop at nido February 6th. She hopes to take her first quilting workshop this year! After recently joining the Vermont Modern Quilt Guild (VTMQG), she has been inspired to quilt, quilt, quilt!

rhinebeck sheep + wool festival

New York State Sheep and Wool Festival in Rhinebeck, NY, also commonly referred to as “Rhinebeck,” is an incredible wool fest taking place every third weekend in October. Two jam-packed days of fiber vendors, workshops, artwork, livestock, and fall colors!

This was an incredible Rhinebeck, not only because it was nido’s first visit, but Fall was at its peak. Oh, the leaves!

First stop: PomPom Quarterly Magazine

The incredible Olga Buraya-Kefelian was on hand sharing her new Suffragette cloche pattern from the upcoming Winter 2015 PomPom Issue. Getting to thumb through the new issue was a treat.

Incredible time meeting some great fiber artists from across the country, including, A Verb for Keeping Warms Kristine Vejar whose book, The Modern Natural Dyer is AMAZING.

Somehow we made it out of there with out purchasing TOO much yarn. A favorite vendor was Catskill Merino Yarn.

Definitely looking forward to returning next year!

recap: april rhodes weaving workshop

Most of you know April Rhodes for her pattern and fabric designer reputation but these days the Ohio based designer is branching out and exploring her love of weaving.

We were lucky enough to host April for an Intro to Weaving Workshop held at the Burlington Firehouse Gallery in late September.

April explains weaving as an ancient art form that explores the use of fiber, color and texture. She enjoys the the slow rhythm and meditative quality of weaving and encourages people to slow down and enjoy the process.

Participants learned the fundamentals of tapestry weaving while creating their very own piece of unique hanging art.

Each weaving was created out of 1 of 3 color ways offered for the workshop but no two weavings were alike.

One of my favorite parts of the workshop was watching everyone’s weaving change shape and unfold.

It was great spending the day learning rya knots and fishbone weaves from the inspirational April. AND creating our very own piece of wall art to top it off!

What an incredible group!

A big thanks to April and all who participated in the workshop. For those of you who missed it but are interested in picking up weaving, nido is now stocking all weaving supplies including Ashford lap looms, roving, cones of cotton warp, and more weaving yarn packs!
