Salt & Still: Indigo + Shibori Dyeing Workshop
In this 3-hour workshop we will create an indigo vat from scratch using only sugar and natural materials – no chemicals. We will discuss the chemical reactions that take place in an indigo vat and how to maintain a vat at home. We will also go over the basics of shibori, a Japanese resist technique that uses folding, binding, and stitching to create beautiful patterns on cloth. Participants will be provided with textile to dye and experiment with and we will also go over how to select and prepare fabric for dyeing with indigo. Participants may also bring a pre-washed, small textile made of a natural fiber like cotton, linen, wool or silk to dye in the vat.
Everyone will leave with an array of shibori textiles dyed in indigo as well as the knowledge of how to create a natural indigo vat at home. This workshop can get messy so wear clothes you don’t mind getting dye on.
Class is limited to 10 participants.
Our Indigo + Shibori Dyeing Workshop with Alison Smith will be taking place at the BCA Firehouse Gallery. Further details about the event will be given upon registration.
