Spinning Tales Recap with Thread & Ladle

Meet Beatrice Perron Dahlen of Thread & Ladle! Our latest speaker in the Spinning Tales with Fiber Folk series stopped by to share her story of creating her first book, Maine Knits.

Beatrice, who resides in southern Maine with her family, has designed knitwear patterns featured in Knitscene, Pom Pom Quarterly, Amirisu, Quince & Co. + many more. She is very active in the Maine knitting community and began to realize how many talented designers reside there. Ideas began to blossom about a book featuring those creators!

In early 2016, she began a Kickstarter campaign for the book and with an overwhelmingly great reception, it was funded! Launching an idea into the world can be nerve racking, but with the support of 546 people from all over the globe, she was doing it! Beatrice spent the next couple of months knitting, designing, and sending Kickstarter gifts to backers. Next came the photography and styling, all of which Beatrice did herself. The book not only features beautiful places in Maine, but also all of the yarns + designers are from her home state, too.

stwff_beatrice2While every step of the way wasn’t always easy, she is thrilled with the end result. Along the way she took great joy in creative elements such as styling, photography + design. Beatrice looks forward to putting out another book in the future, so keep your eyes peeled.

Not only did Bea share her story of Maine Knits, but also a trunk show of the beautiful pieces featured in the book. All we can say is, WOW. Stop by the shop to pick up your signed copy of the book + cast on your favorite!

When Beatrice is not designing knitwear, she enjoys sharing time with her children + husband, as well as teaching handwork at her local Waldorf school. Thank you Beatrice for sharing your story with us!

marled_magic_2Marled Magic Workshop

Saturday, May 6th 11:00 am – 2:00 pm* UPDATE – Class is full.

Saturday, May 6th 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Cost: $75 (not including materials)

Learn all about Stephen’s Marled magic tricks for combining multiple yarns. Participants will experiment with holding 2 strands of yarn together to create fabrics that look like painted works of art. Choose between Stephen’s Marled Magic shawl design OR Samen shawl. Digital pattern included with class. Class is limited to 20 students.

Marled Magic 1Materials: Marled Magic shawl participants should bring a colorful pile of fingering weight yarns and a US8 circular needle. Stephen recommends bringing a color palette of at least 5-10 colors to start. For example, bring shades of blue to create a warm palette with pinks, oranges, and reds. Gather more yarn from your stash than you think you may need because you can always edit your yarn selection later. It’s best to have a broad range of colors and yardage amounts so you have more options to choose from while you knit each section. If you want a super colorful shawl, bring a bag full of colorful fingering weight yarns to stripe and play! Lace weight mohair yarns are also highly encouraged.

Samen ShawlMaterials: Samen shawl participants should bring 5 different colors (full skeins) of lace weight yarn and US 5 needles. If you are a tight knitter, use a size 6 or 7 needle. In the beginning of the class, participants will experiment and play with color combinations and then then start the shawl project in the second half of class.  Please also bring a collection of scrap yarn (approximately 7-10 colors of fingering weight yarn) and US 8 / 5mm needles to play with marled color techniques. Mohair and fluffy textures are also encouraged.
