Cirrus Cowl

photo-25

Cowls are fantastic for the colder months and they knit up super quick which makes them the perfect gift knitting. YES! We are already thinking about our handmade holiday here at the shop! The Cirrus Cowl from Swans Island Yarns was a pattern that I was drawn to immediately. Paired with the String Theory Caper Sock Yarn, a great squishy fingering weight yarn that is 80% Merino, 10% Nylon, and 10% CASHMERE, the Cirrus Cowl makes for a luxurious accessory that is both functional and fashionable. String Theory yarn has quickly become one of my favorites and I loved the color Shale for this project. There is enough variegation to keep everything interesting, but it is subtle enough that it doesn’t over power the cable pattern of the cowl.

This Weekend at Study Hall Collective

Study Hall Collective is a collaborative workspace for creative types. They occupy a stunning space above nido and also happen to be the go-to if we need anything from printer paper to satin red pigment ink. Yes! Great neighbors indeed.

This weekend they are hosting 6 artists in their Assembly Pop Up. Be sure to stop up on Saturday September 14th from 10:00 – 4:00.

staple dress

There have been a ton of deliveries at the shop the past couple of weeks. Yarn, fabric, patterns, books, you name it! So many wonderful and exciting things to share. I have to slow down though and tell you about a new pattern that you NEED!

The Staple Dress, by April Rhodes has been THE go to for handmade dresses this summer and we can see why.

I myself have made two of them already, one in cotton and one in rayon. I would definietly size down as the pattern seems to run big. I haven’t snapped any photos of my finished Staple dresses yet but below are a few of my favrorite versions out there.

This is Rae from Made-By-Rae’s version.

Elizabeth from Hamilton Chicklets made hers in a neon doubble guaze print!

April herself made a monifited version with a collar. LOVE it!

Meredith from Olivia Jane Handcrafted made a couple out of chambray with contrast binding.

As you can see, the dress is very versitile and can be made with SO many fabrics to accomodate individual styles. A must have!

earl grey mitts

I just finished knitting up the Earl Grey mitts from Swans Island. I have been looking at this pattern for a few months off and on as I love the cable pattern on the front of the mittens and the gender-neutral style of them. The Earl Grey mitts are not as long as other patterns, but they are perfect for when you just need to keep your wrists and hands warm from chilly air-conditioned work places. I hadn’t worked with Swans Island Fingering weight before, but I have had my eye on the green-grey Reindeer Moss color that came in a few months ago. I may have a minor color obsession. The mittens are knit using US size 4 needles and pattern worked up surprisingly quickly. The cable pattern was easy to memorize and the ribbing along the back helps keep them snug against the hand. The String Theory Caper sock yarn would also be a great choice for these mitts and the cashmere in the yarn would give them a little bit of added luxury.

film in the fridge at nido

Ashley from Film in the Fridge has been dropping off quilts all week to hang and sell in the shop. This is great opportunity to see Ashley’s quilts up close and possibly add a one of a kind quilt to your wall or couch. Of course they are moving fast and we all know why! Here is a little preview of her available offerings:

Baby Triangles

Ruby Strings

Greek Isles

Ashley’s quilts will be hanging in nido all weekend. Tonight we are hosting an artist reception from 5:30 – 7:00. Hope to see you!

rayon challis

We are thrilled to report that nido has added Anna Maria Horner’s Field Study rayon challis  to its curated selection of fabrics offered at the shop. We snapped a bunch more photos of the new collection but our camera batteries died before we could get them transferred to our computer so this one teaser photo will have to do.

If you would like to learn more about the look, feel and how to wash and care for rayon challis, we encourage you to read Anna Maria Horner’s blog posts here and here.
